Sincere and Pure Devotion to Christ

It has been a wild ride the past few months with job and family changes.  My role at church has changed from teaching pastor to lead pastor, so I am adjusting to new things.  We also had two deaths and the corresponding funerals added to the mix.  As a result, writing was shuffled to the back burner.  Through all the emotional ups and downs, God often reminds me in my devotional times that he is in control and that he is still at work.  We have seen him do some great things already.

There is one thought that has come to me a few times, and on which I need to meditate even more so I can more effectively apply it to my own life.  As I read through 2 Corinthians last week, I was struck by a phrase in the early part of the book and by a related one near the end.  2 Corinthians 1:12 says, “We behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God.” (ESV)  And later in chapter 11, Paul expresses his concern for the church in Corinth with these words, “I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”  (v3)

“Simplicity and godly sincerity” and “a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”  No matter how complicated life may seem to get, no matter how busy we may seem to be, no matter what sort of emotional roller coaster we are on, we should always focus on simple, sincere devotion to Christ.   I only hope I can practice that consistently in days ahead.
